We watched a video on Food Miles. We looked at where our food comes from, how far it has to travel and how this relates to climate change. We decided to see where our food comes from in our classroom. The pupils brought in packaging of various foods such as strawberries and we checked their origin. We calculated food miles using www.foodmiles.com this is a way of attempting to measure how far food has travelled before it reaches the consumer. We also mapped some food products on a world map. We will repeat this exercise in June to see if we purchase foods which are locally produced. We were very surprised at the distance travelled by some food products.
